Building Credibility and Consensus as Newly-Tenured or Junior Faculty Chairs

Authors

Abstract

Participants will explore the challenges that newly-tenured or junior faculty department chairs may face. Representing a small, private college and a regional comprehensive university, our panelists will offer recommendations for building credibility and consensus within the department even when there may be a gap of age and/or experience between the chair and faculty.

Publisher Notes

  • Participants will discuss the challenges that they may face when assuming a leadership position with authority over colleagues who may be uncomfortable with the sudden change in the institutional hierarchy--especially if the chair is younger, less-experienced, or newly-tenured.

Participants will explore successful strategies for building consensus and credibility when one moves from junior faculty to chair very quickly.

Participants will learn about the benefits and challenges presented by two different department cultures and institutional support structures.
