Abstract

This session will focus discussion on the impact of merging pre-existing departments and/or colleges to form a new entity on Chair leadership strategies. Participants will discuss factors to be considered to ensure successful transition for the department and maximize growth in the new entity.

  • 1. Participants will discuss the various aspects of the merging of pre-existing units on campus: rationale, cost-benefit, regional/nation trend.

    2. Participants will discuss department-level factors to consider through the stages of transition (e.g., individual/group alignment, re-establishing departmental and program identity, etc.) and how to maximize on the momentum of transition.

    3. Participants will discuss examples of department-level initiatives and programs to facilitate collaboration with ‘new’ faculty within the unit (e.g., pilot research funding, student-oriented programs/groups, team-building, etc.). This discussion will include factors to consider when supporting these collaborations in research, scholarship and educational programs.

    4. Participants will discuss assimilation of fellow leadership in the new unit (i.e., other chairs, associate deans, dean, etc.).
