Publisher Notes
Participants will be able to:
1. Define what is meant nationally by the term retention
2. Outline motivating factors (fiscal, reputational, visibility) to gain chair support for the creation of programs that support retention, for participation in campus level programs and for the encouragement of faculty who work in this area.
3. Provide examples of efficacious, campus-level retention programs that target all beginning students (Thematic Learning Communities [TLC], Summer Bridge), a program that retains beginners but is used for the full degree time (electronic Personal Development Portfolio [ePDP]), and programs that target specific subsets of students (21st Century Scholars Support Program, Diversity Enrichment and Achievement Program [DEAP]).
4. Provide examples of department-level retention programs (Freshmen Work Program [FWP], Peer-Led Team Learning [PLTL], Life Health Sciences Internships [LHSI]) that have been proven to be effective.
