Abstract
The county fair has long been an important institution for popular education in rural communities across the United States. A preciousfew endure as community celebrations that give center stage to intergenerationallearning. The fair is multidimensional, reaching back to sustain activities that have been central to local lifeways, reaching out to incorporate each succeeding generation, and reaching forward to stretch participants' horizons. Those elements that emerged as critical to young participants' experiences oflearning and belonging are summarized in this report of5 years ofparticipant observation in Bauer County, Wisconsin.
