Abstract
In many rural schools in Australia, students must make career decisions at an earlierstage than is necessary in urban areas because full high school education is not locally available. After year 10, students who have been reared and educated in the rural interior ofthe country must study independently, or migrate to urban centres, if they want to pursue their education. Their choice reflects fundamental social differences in rural communities. The significance ofpost-year10 vocational choice is that it remains largely the invisible concern ofthe numerically important rural working class.
