Abstract

This study examined achievement differences among rural, suburban, and urban school students. using data from the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988 (NELS:88). Performance comparisons were made for nationally representative samples ofB", 1(Jh, and 12th graders in reading, math, science, and social studies. We found that rural students performed as well as, if not better than, their peers in metropolitan schools. These results provide evidence that, all else equal, rural students do not suffer disadvantage simply as the result oftheir residence in rural areas or their attendance at rural schools.
